What is an invoice?

Invoice, or in simple terms bill, Is a document given by a seller to buyer, in which buyer agree to pay the seller for products or services stated in invoice. Business invoice is an essential document in almost every money transaction.
Invoice contain detailed bill information left by vendors and suppliers with their products and service description, and usually contain quantity of items, price, billable hours, contact for payment etc.
Invoice document indicates that buyer or seller is owning or owned the money, saying we sent them invoice means “they owe us money” and vice versa.
How to write an invoice?
There are basically 3 main parts of an invoice, the header or the top part, body and footer.
Header contains business name, address, email or/and telephone and web site if available, law in some countries requires you to include your business registration number. Header should also contain an invoice number. This number is a running serial number, you should only have one number per invoice issued, and there should be no 2 invoices with the same number. Invoice date, customer name and payments term or how soon you are expected to be paid should also be in header.
Invoice body have to contain description of the service or products you are supplying, also there should be brief scoop of work if it is service providing. Quantity, units of measure and price per unite and total amount of items.
Footer or bottom of invoice document must have total amount of all individual items, tax amount and total price after tax. Payment instruction, comments, bank account number if it is wire transfer and other necessary data.
There are different types of invoice some of most used are pro forma, credit memento, debit memento, self-billing invoice, timesheet and few more.
Electronic invoices are now frequently used, they are not paper-based but transferred over internet, common electronic invoices are sent in PDF via email.
